DOC OLE2 कम्पाउंड बाइनरी फ़ॉर्मेट (CFBF) का उपयोग करता है — एक फ़ाइल में FAT-जैसा फ़ाइल सिस्टम। कंटेंट कई स्ट्रीम्स में बँटा होता है जिसमें जटिल ऑफ़सेट टेबल होती हैं। VBA मैक्रोज़ अलग स्टोरेज में रहते हैं।

DOC Word for DOS (1983) के साथ शुरू हुआ और OLE2 कम्पाउंड डॉक्यूमेंट स्ट्रक्चर पर विकसित होता रहा। 2008 में Microsoft ने बाइनरी स्पेसिफ़िकेशन प्रकाशित की, लेकिन तब तक DOCX पहले से डिफ़ॉल्ट बन चुका था।
