Video Aspect Ratios
Different platforms expect different aspect ratios. Using the wrong ratio results in letterboxing (black bars), cropping, or distortion — all of which make content look unprofessional.
Standard Aspect Ratios
16:9 (1920×1080) is the default for YouTube, web embedding, and most video platforms. 9:16 (1080×1920) is vertical video for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. 1:1 (1080×1080) is the square format used on Instagram feed posts. 4:5 (1080×1350) is Instagram's portrait format, maximizing screen real estate in the feed.
Resolution Tiers
Standard Definition: 480p (854×480) — minimum for watchable video. HD: 720p (1280×720) — the practical minimum for modern content. Full HD: 1080p (1920×1080) — the standard for most web video. 2K/QHD: 1440p (2560×1440) — useful for detailed content (tutorials, gaming). 4K/UHD: 2160p (3840×2160) — for cinematic content and future-proofing.
Platform-Specific Requirements
YouTube recommends uploading at the highest resolution available — it handles transcoding to lower qualities. TikTok accepts up to 1080p; higher resolutions are downscaled. Instagram compresses video aggressively — upload at 1080p for the best result after compression. Twitter/X limits video to 512MB and 2:20 duration.
Frame Rate Considerations
24fps for cinematic content, 30fps for standard video, 60fps for gaming, sports, and smooth motion. Higher frame rates mean larger files at the same resolution. Most platforms accept 24-60fps. Mixing frame rates in a project causes judder — pick one and stick with it. Slow motion requires high-frame-rate capture: 120fps plays back at 4× slow motion at 30fps.
Pixel Aspect Ratio
Modern digital video uses square pixels (PAR 1:1). Legacy formats (DV, DVD) use non-square pixels, which causes stretching if played back without correction. When converting legacy footage, ensure your tool applies the correct pixel aspect ratio correction.
